Visiting Arunachal Part 2: Stepping into Arunachal: Orchids, Waterfalls & Winding Roads
🌿 First Glimpse of the Eastern Himalayas
Crossing into Arunachal Pradesh felt like flipping to a new chapter — the terrain changed, the air grew lighter, and the landscapes began to breathe life into our journey. As winding roads unfolded before us, we embraced our first experiences in this enchanting state — a soft blend of missed moments, flowing rivers, and mountain calm.
🌸 Tipi Orchid Research Centre: Missed, but Memorable
Just beyond Bhalukpong, we headed toward the much-talked-about Orchid Research and Development Centre at Tipi. Nestled along the banks of the Kameng River, this center is a vibrant hub of orchid conservation and research.
Unfortunately, we arrived just past the closing hour — 4:30 PM, when the gates had already shut for the day.
Though we couldn’t step inside, standing at the entrance and imagining the lush greenhouses, shaded orchidaria, and rows of rare blooms was enchanting in itself. With over 10,000 orchid species, including several rare and endangered varieties, this facility isn’t just for tourists — it’s a vital sanctuary for floral biodiversity in Arunachal.
💧 Nichiphula Waterfall: A Serene Pause
Further along the route, we made a quick stop at Nichiphula Waterfall, a quiet gem tucked into the hillside. The waterfall wasn’t grand or thundering — instead, it fell like a thin silver thread over emerald slopes, painting a picture of subtle beauty.
We stood there for a few minutes — no noise, no crowds, just the soothing sound of trickling water and the endless green of the valley before us. These are the pauses that remind you to slow down and breathe.
🌊 Kameng River: The Calm Before the Adventure
As we descended toward Dirang, we met the Kameng River, flowing gracefully along the edge of the valley. Its turquoise waters shimmered under the afternoon sun. We passed a river rafting center, though it looked like rafting season hadn’t kicked off yet. Still, the sight of the calm river meandering through thick forests made for a scenic treat.
🏔️ Restful Retreat at Brokpa Resort, Dirang
Our day ended in the charming high-altitude town of Dirang, where we checked into the peaceful Brokpa Resort for the night. Tucked amidst misty hills, the resort offered a warm and cozy respite. With traditional touches and modern comforts, it was the perfect place to unwind and let the mountain silence lull us into rest.
The stars above were brighter here, and the chill in the air brought a certain stillness that only Himalayan towns can offer.
✨ Reflections
Our first day in Arunachal wasn’t packed with touristy highlights — and perhaps that’s what made it so special. From the silent grace of a missed orchid garden to the whispering waterfall and quiet riverside views, it was a gentle invitation into the deeper wonders of the region.
Sometimes, the journey begins not with grand checklists, but with quiet reminders of how beautiful the simple things can be.
