Visiting Arunachal Part 1: A Wild Beginning: Our Pobitora Experience in Assam

Overview: Before we ventured into the misty hills of Arunachal Pradesh, we decided to make a wild little pitstop — quite literally — at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. Just an hour or so from Guwahati, this hidden gem turned out to be the perfect curtain-raiser for our northeastern adventure.

Where the Rhinos Roam

Pobitora may not be as widely known as Kaziranga, but don’t let that fool you — this sanctuary is bursting with life. It’s most famous for its thriving population of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, and if you’re lucky (as we were), you don’t have to wait long to spot one grazing in the open grasslands. What makes Pobitora truly unique is its incredibly high density of rhinos — they seem to rule the land here.

The sanctuary spreads across a patchwork of wetlands and tall grass fields that stretch out to the horizon, framed by gentle hills and the ever-mysterious Brahmaputra River not too far away.

More Than Just Rhinos

While the rhinos are undoubtedly the stars of the show, Pobitora offers much more to the patient observer. We caught glimpses of wild boars and even a few water buffaloes trudging through the marshy terrain. The forested patches that surround the grasslands are believed to shelter elusive creatures like leopards, porcupines, pangolins, and capped langurs — although they mostly prefer to keep to the shadows.

What truly caught us off guard, though, was the birdlife. Over 100 species of birds, both resident and migratory, find refuge in these wetlands. For bird lovers, this place is nothing short of paradise. From elegant storks to colourful kingfishers and large flocks of ducks floating gently on the waters, it was a visual and auditory feast.

Conservation with a Cause

Pobitora is more than just a place to see wildlife — it’s a testament to successful conservation. It has become one of the core sites contributing to India’s efforts to revive and redistribute the rhino population, with several individuals having been relocated to other parks as part of a visionary breeding and conservation initiative.

Despite its smaller size compared to other sanctuaries, it packs a powerful punch when it comes to biodiversity and ecological richness.

Where We Stayed

After a long day in the wild, we checked in at Zizina Otis Resort, a cozy property located right next to the sanctuary. The stay was peaceful, surrounded by greenery and filled with the soothing sounds of nature. It gave us the perfect base to relax, sip some chai, and reflect on the magical day we’d just had.

Final Thoughts

If you’re heading to Northeast India and have a day to spare before your main itinerary, Pobitora is an excellent detour. Close to Guwahati yet deeply immersed in nature, it’s a rare pocket of wilderness that lets you get up close with India’s majestic rhinos and so much more.

It wasn’t just a wildlife stop — it was a meaningful moment that set the tone for the rest of our journey. Pobitora reminded us that sometimes, the lesser-known places offer the richest experiences.
