Visiting the 'Shilpa-Kashi': Shivarayapattana

Overview: Having a rich history dating back to the time of the Gangas from the 8th century, the quaint little village of Shivarayapattana in Kolar District is known as the 'Shilpa-Kashi' of Karnataka for the tradition of stone sculptors.

The entrance to the village itself greets us with families busy in carving figures of Gods, famous Personalities, Animals and other figureheads. It is believed that the village sculptors can create beautiful images with designs from the Gangas, Nolambas, Hoysalas and Cholas using Blackstone found near Vemagal. Most of the orders from these sculptors come from the temples which are to be built or need renovation. Other images which we saw were of Basavanna, Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and many others.

  Overview: Killing time for 4 days on a long weekend was definitely not going well with me. So suddenly decided to make some quick travel plans. Being brought up in Chandigarh for over 20 years, I wanted to refresh my childhood memories with my wife and moreover she had not been to North India. With all resorts booked around Bangalore and no bus reservations available, we decided to take a plunge on the long distance route. My wife, being a tatkal reservation expert :), booked tickets from Bangalore to Delhi for 25th Dec, and the return trip by flight from Delhi to Bangalore for 4th Jan. My job was to fill the itinerary between these days. I wanted to cover as many places as possible, chalked out a plan for that. A visit to my native place: The Village of Music, Rudrapatna

Overview:  Situated on the banks of the river Cauvery, Rudrapatna is a beautiful small village in Hassan District of Karnataka with rich history, and happens to be my ancestral village too. This is one of the places where the people from the Sankethi community initially settled around 700 years ago, and were instrumental in modelling this as a 'village of music' or 'Sangeetha Grama' as it is known today. The village is also known for its Sanskrit Paathashaala, at Shankara Math near the Rama temple, which is trying to keep the traditions alive in the village. Rudrapatna Rudrapatna Sankethi community is known for music, and this village has produced many Carnatic musicians like R.K. Suryanarayana, R.K. Srikantan, Rathnamala Prakash, R.K.
