Unearthing Time: A Journey Through Fossils and Nature at Thathachi Manai

Overview: Tucked away in the lush greenery near Denkanikottai, just a short drive from Bangalore, lies a retreat unlike any other—Thathachi Manai. Spread across 6.5 acres of serene farmland, this rustic paradise is not just about nature and relaxation; it’s also home to a fascinating collection of fossils from across the world, carefully preserved by Anand David, a passionate collector and seasoned traveler.

A Collector of Time Itself

Anand David, the founder-director of the Management Foundation for Organisation Research and Development, has spent over 20 years traveling across 81 countries for his work as a management consultant. But along the way, he developed an unusual passion—collecting fossils. His journey into paleontology began serendipitously in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he stumbled upon a seemingly ordinary stone being sold by a street vendor. Upon cracking it open, he discovered a fossilized marine mollusk, marking the start of a lifelong quest to uncover the secrets of the past.

His collection now includes remarkable fossils from Morocco, Mongolia, China, Russia, Cambodia, the United States, and beyond. Among the most incredible finds are trilobites, ammonites, orthoceras, and devonites, dating back over 400 million years from the Devonian period. He has also preserved petrified tree logs, twigs, and leaves, some dating back 20 million years.

The Thrill of Holding a Meteorite

While fossils tell the story of Earth’s ancient life forms, Anand’s most extraordinary find extends beyond our planet—a piece of a meteorite. Holding a fragment from outer space is a surreal experience, a humbling reminder of how tiny we are in the vastness of the universe.

A Retreat That Blends History with Nature

Beyond the fossil collection, Thathachi Manai is a destination that invites visitors to slow down and immerse themselves in nature. The farm stay is designed with handcrafted spaces, including rustic cottages, a waterfall plunge pool, a cozy gazebo dining area, and open bonfire spots. The gardens are filled with exotic plants, offering a perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway.

A Unique Experience for Travelers & Nature Enthusiasts

Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover, or someone looking for a quiet retreat, Thathachi Manai offers an experience that blends prehistoric wonders with modern-day tranquility. Anand David’s enthusiasm and knowledge make the visit even more enriching, as he shares stories of his discoveries and insights into the fossilization process.
