Chennapatna & around: The land of Toys

Overview: I hadn't visited Chennapatna solely for the purpose of buying the locally made toys. This time we thought of exploring the local shops for some wooden craft shopping.

As usual we clubbed a few other places so that we can have a half day trip from Bangalore. Around 60km from Bangalore is the Sanjeevaraya Anjaneya temple at Devarahosahalli, located not very far from the Kanva Dam. This whole area is known as the Kanva Kshetra. According to the priest, when Vyasaraya was meditating near the Kanva river, he heard an Omkar sound emerging near the place where the temple now stands. He came close to this place and then installed the Anjaneya image and hence people started worshipping it. It is believed that people with ailments come to this temple to seek blessings of Anjaneya to be cured of their illness.

There is a small lake near the temple and some monkeys were also seen playing on the tree top.

From here we went into the town of Chennapatna where we visited the Neelakantheshwara temple, one of the oldest temples in Chennapatna. This temple dates back to the Vijayanagara period, and was later renovated during the Mysore times. The beautiful Nandi image at the entrance is the addition by the Wodeyars. The Shivalinga is believed to be much older than the temple itself.

We also visited the Vijayanagara era Varadarajaswamy temple and the Srinivasa temple, both near the fort area.

Finally we went to Manjunatha Toy shop, where we shopped for Chennapatna Toys. Its a humble shop with the first floor being used as a warehouse and the ground floor had display items. We got a good discount on the toys and would recommend this shop for anyone who is interested in buying Navaratri Dolls, Children's playing toys and other household wooden items like Agarbathi holder.

We are carrying packed lunch for our trips these days and the villages around Chennapatna are extremely beautiful to sit beside a lake or a farm and have lunch. Important thing is not to litter around and carry all the trash back.
